Quick Answer: Spokeo or Instant Checkmate?

Disclosure: Lullar earns a commission if you buy a Spokeo membership through links on this page. Free checks first, a paid report only if you still need one.

They are built around different questions. Instant Checkmate calls itself a “Public Records Search Service” and leads with criminal and traffic records, arrest records and an inmate search; its homepage form takes a first name, last name and state. Spokeo is built around identifiers: its search tabs are Name, Email (“Search by Email or Username”), Phone and Address, and its homepage lists six report categories: contact information (phone numbers, email addresses and usernames), address history, property data and assets, personal details, social media profiles and court records, the last with the footnote “Criminal court records are not included in all plans. Additional fees may apply.”

Spokeo vs Instant Checkmate Compared: Inputs, Reports, Prices and Billing

Everything below comes from the two companies’ own pages as read on 31 October 2026 (links in the last section). Instant Checkmate publishes its membership prices; Spokeo shows its consumer price only at checkout, so the Spokeo price row is what reviewers reported in autumn 2026, not an official figure.

Both compile public records, both tell you to do your own due diligence, and neither publishes an accuracy rate, so treat any match as a lead. Our paid people search comparison puts both beside BeenVerified, TruthFinder and Intelius, and our best background check sites guide ranks the record-heavy services.

Email, Username or Phone as the Starting Point: Spokeo

Spokeo's search takes a name, an email address or username, a phone number or an address, and its paid report gathers contact details, address history, social profiles and, in some plans, court records from US public records. A trial converts to a renewing membership unless cancelled.

Where Instant Checkmate Fits: Records First, Unlimited Reports, a Cheap Phone Plan

Instant Checkmate’s pitch is the background check. Its homepage says a search “may discover criminal and traffic records, arrest records, related court documents, addresses, age, known aliases, and more”, and its person report, per the pricing page, may include birth information, photos, phone numbers, social media profiles, email addresses, address history, employment and educational history, business ownership, assets and criminal, traffic and court records. The person plan includes “Unlimited Person Reports” and report monitoring, and the site says it does “not alert the person you’ve searched”.

Two things to know before paying. First, the published price is at the top of the category: $35.47 a month, or $85.13 up front for three months, and the terms describe the membership as a “negative option” that keeps billing “regardless of your frequency of use or whether the service is used at all” until you cancel. Second, the pricing page we read listed no trial; the terms say promotional “Non-Standard Membership Plans” bill at whatever rate and frequency was disclosed at sign-up, and the help centre says renewals happen “at the then current non-promotional full membership price”, so read the offer screen. Our Instant Checkmate review covers what readers report and the 2023 FTC settlement that also covered its sister brand TruthFinder.

The one bargain on its pricing page is the phone plan: “Unlimited Phone Reports” for $5.99 a month, with the owner’s name, address, photos and social profiles where available. For who is calling me, start with our free who called me checks and the reverse phone lookup comparison.

Where Spokeo Fits: Email, Username or Phone as the Starting Point

Spokeo is the one to open when what you hold is an identifier rather than a name. Its “Search by Email or Username” tab is the clearest difference between the two: we found no username search on Instant Checkmate’s pages. Its phone search promises the “current phone owner name, previous phone owners, cell phones and landlines, carrier details, spam risk, and more”, and its homepage lists six report categories: contact information (phone numbers, email addresses and usernames), address history, property data and assets, personal details, social media profiles and court records, the last with the footnote “Criminal court records are not included in all plans. Additional fees may apply.” Spokeo adds that “criminal records may not relate to the subject of your search”, which is how to read any people-search result.

On price, Spokeo publishes nothing on its public pages; reviewers in autumn 2026 quoted about $20–25 a month and about $15 a month on a three-month plan, below Instant Checkmate’s published $35.47 and $28.38. Its payment policy says plans are prepaid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually or annually, renew at the same term, and that “unused searches do not rollover”, so its membership has a search allowance where Instant Checkmate’s says unlimited. Our Spokeo review covers what readers report; reverse email lookup and who owns an email address put the free and paid steps in order.

Before you click: Spokeo’s payment policy says a trial converts to a renewing paid membership unless cancelled by 11:59 PM Pacific on its last day, with no refunds or proration. Trial length and price appear at sign-up.

How Each One Bills: Trials, Renewals and Cancelling

Spokeo (payment policy): an uncancelled trial “shall convert to an ongoing subscription”; cancel before 11:59 PM Pacific on the trial’s last day; plans are prepaid monthly, quarterly, semi-annually or annually and renew at the same term; all sales are final, with no refund or proration for partial months; unused searches do not roll over; cancel under “Usage & Subscriptions” in Account Settings or by phone.

Instant Checkmate (terms, section 11 and 12; help centre): the membership “will automatically renew every 30 days” at $35.47 plus tax, or every 90 days at $85.13, “until you cancel”; cancel online in the account dashboard under Membership Settings, by live chat, or by phone at (800) 222-8985, 7am to 4pm Pacific, Monday to Friday; there are “no early termination fees”, but a term already begun is charged in full and no refund is issued “with few exceptions”, with access continuing to the end of the cycle. App Store and Google Play purchases are cancelled through the store.

Rule of thumb: both renew until you act, so set a reminder on the day you sign up. Instant Checkmate charges more per month but publishes the number; Spokeo costs less according to reviewers but shows its price only at checkout.

What Neither Does, and the Free Step Before Both

Neither searches by photo (use a reverse image search), neither shows anything inside a private account, and both hold US records only.

Lullar is a free starting point, not a report: a name, email or username becomes one-click searches on 175 public platforms; a username is checked directly on about 60 of them; an email is checked for a Gravatar, and the part before the @ is tested as a username, where a hit may be someone else. It has no phone search or public records, cannot see private accounts, and does not detect which services an email is signed up to. Run it from the box above before you pay for anything; Lullar vs Spokeo shows where the free check stops. For an email, search social media accounts by email and username search by email go step by step; for a handle, account finder checks it across public platforms.

How to Choose Between Spokeo and Instant Checkmate

Personal use only. The consumer sites here say they are not consumer reporting agencies under the FCRA, so their results may not be used for employment, tenant, credit or insurance decisions. Instant Checkmate's terms add that its data may not be used for any FCRA purpose, including employment, insurance or housing eligibility. Such decisions need a consumer reporting agency; none of these products is one.

Sources and Method (checked 31 October 2026)

Public pages read on 31 October 2026 without logging in or buying anything; we quote them, not third-party reviews, except where a reviewer figure is labelled as such. Spokeo’s consumer price is not on its public pages and was not purchased to check.

Not verified: Spokeo’s current price and trial terms, any Instant Checkmate promotional trial, and the ownership statements, which come from our earlier review rather than these pages.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Spokeo better than Instant Checkmate?

It depends on the question. Spokeo's search takes a name, email address or username, phone number or address, and its report leads with contact details, address history and social profiles; Instant Checkmate's homepage takes a name and state and leads with criminal, traffic and court records. For an email or handle, Spokeo; for someone's record history, Instant Checkmate.

How much does Instant Checkmate cost compared with Spokeo?

Instant Checkmate publishes $35.47 a month or $85.13 for three months ($28.38 a month), plus a $5.99-a-month phone-report plan. Spokeo shows its consumer price only at checkout; reviewers in autumn 2026 quoted about $20 to $25 a month. Both renew automatically until cancelled.

Does Instant Checkmate have a free trial?

The pricing page we read on 31 October 2026 listed no trial. Its terms say promotional plans bill at the rate and frequency disclosed when you enrol, and its help centre says renewals are charged at the full non-promotional price, so read the offer screen before entering a card.

Does Instant Checkmate search by username or email?

Its help centre describes searching by name, phone number, email and address, and has a reverse email lookup article. We found no username search on its pages. Spokeo's Email tab is labelled Search by Email or Username, and Lullar checks a username free across public platforms.

Can I use Spokeo or Instant Checkmate to screen a tenant or employee?

No. Both say they are not consumer reporting agencies under the FCRA, and Instant Checkmate's terms bar using its data for credit, employment, insurance or housing eligibility. Use a consumer reporting agency.

Which is more accurate, Spokeo or Instant Checkmate?

Neither publishes an accuracy rate. Spokeo says criminal records may not relate to the person you searched; Instant Checkmate says its information may not be complete or up to date and should not replace your own due diligence. Treat any result as a lead and confirm it with a second source.
