How to Find an X (Twitter) Account by Email or Phone (2026) — illustrated guide on Lullar
X lets people be found by email or phone only through contact sync. How it works, why the login-page trick is off limits, and other ways to the account.
🔍 Two ways to search
1. Lullar (free) — social profiles across 175+ platforms.
2. Spokeo (paid) — phone, address, public records. Open →
Quick answer: X's search does not accept emails or phone numbers. Save the email or number as a contact and use Sync address book contacts; X shows people who allow discovery by email or phone. Otherwise try the email's handle without dots, since X handles allow only letters, numbers and underscores, or get a name from a reverse lookup such as Spokeo.

Quick Answer: Can You Find an X Account by Email or Phone Number?

Only through contact sync. X's search does not take emails or phone numbers. Save the email or number in your contacts and use X's Sync address book contacts; X then shows contacts who left Let people who have your email address find you or Let people who have your phone number find you switched on.

Otherwise, turn the email or number into a handle or a name. For an email, the part before the @ is often close to the X handle; Lullar's free search checks it across X and 175+ other networks, along with the address's Gravatar. For a phone number, messaging apps and a reverse phone lookup such as Spokeo give you a name to search. Lullar does not search phone numbers. Use this for personal reasons, not for employment, tenant or credit decisions.

Step 1: Use X's Contact Sync

  1. Save the email or number in a contact card on your phone.
  2. Turn on contact syncing in X: Settings and privacy > Privacy and safety > Discoverability and contacts > Sync address book contacts.
  3. Check the suggested accounts X shows from your contacts.

Every X user controls the two discoverability switches on that same screen, and anyone who turned them off will not appear. You can remove uploaded contacts with Remove all contacts when you are done.

Why You Should Not Use the Login Page

In August 2022 Twitter disclosed that a bug in its login flow, introduced in June 2021, let someone enter an email or phone number and learn which account it belonged to; the company said it found out in July 2022 that the bug had been exploited. Press reports described a dataset of about 5.4 million accounts compiled that way. The bug is fixed, and typing someone's details into X's login or password-reset screens now just sends them a code or alert. It is not a search method.

Step 2: Turn an Email Into a Likely Handle

X handles can only contain letters, numbers and underscores, and are at most 15 characters long. That changes how you translate an email:

EmailHandles to try at x.com/
jane.doe88@gmail.comjanedoe88, jane_doe88, janedoe (periods are not allowed)
jane.doe.writes@outlook.comjanedoewrites, jane_doe_writes (both 15 characters or fewer)
alexandra.johnson@gmail.comtoo long as is; try ajohnson, alexjohnson, alexandra_j

Also search the email in quotes on Google with the word twitter or x.com; journalists, academics and creators often list a contact email in their X bio. Confirm any match with the photo, name and posts.

Step 3: Turn a Phone Number Into a Name

Then search the name in X's search (People tab) and paste it, or any email you found, into the search at the top of this page. Our guide on how to find someone on X covers name searches in detail.

Limits and Fair Use

Many X accounts are pseudonymous on purpose: journalists' sources, people discussing health or sexuality, and people escaping abuse. If an account is anonymous, think hard about why you want to unmask it, and never post someone's identity or contact details: X's rules prohibit sharing private information without permission. If an account is harassing you, report it to X and keep records. People-search results may not be used for employment, tenant, credit or insurance decisions.

Which Method to Use When

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you search X (Twitter) by email or phone number?

No. X's search does not accept emails or phone numbers. The only built-in route is syncing your address book, which shows contacts who allow others to find them by email or phone.

How do I stop people finding my X account by email or phone?

Go to Settings and privacy, Privacy and safety, Discoverability and contacts, and turn off both Let people who have your email address find you and Let people who have your phone number find you.

Does Lullar search X by email?

Lullar checks the email's Gravatar and searches the part before the @ as a username across X and 175+ other networks, for free. Because X handles cannot contain periods, also try the handle without dots.

Will the person know I searched for them?

Searching on X, Google, Lullar or Spokeo does not notify them. Entering their email or number on X's login or reset pages can send them a code.

Is it legal to find someone's X account from an email or number?

Using public information for personal reasons is generally legal. Posting someone's private information breaks X's rules and can be illegal, and people-search reports may not be used for employment, tenant, credit or insurance decisions.
