Can You Look Up Who Owns a Cash App, Venmo or Zelle Account? Quick Answer
Partly, and for free. All three apps will tell you whether a phone number or email has an account and show the name on it. None of them will tell you who the person really is: Cash App and Venmo show a display name the user typed in themselves, and support teams at all three will not reveal an account holder's identity to another user.
So a payment-app lookup is a two-part job. First use the app to see the account and the name it shows. Then check that name against the rest of the person's footprint: the username they use elsewhere, and who the phone number is registered to. That second part is what catches a fake seller, a fake landlord or an "accidental payment" scam before your money is gone, because these payments are instant and very hard to reverse.
What Each App Shows You
| Look up by | What you see | Web profile | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cash App | $Cashtag, phone, email, name | Display name, photo, $Cashtag | cash.app/$cashtag |
| Venmo | Username, name, phone, email | Display name, photo, username; public payments and friends if not set to private | venmo.com/u/username |
| Zelle | Phone or email, inside your bank's app | The name the person enrolled with at their bank, before you confirm | None |
| PayPal | Email, phone, PayPal.Me link | Account name or business name | paypal.me/username |
Whether a phone or email search finds someone also depends on their privacy settings, so "no account found" does not always mean there is none.
Spokeo's reverse phone and name search draws on 12+ billion US records to show who a number is registered to, their other numbers and emails, location history and linked social profiles where found.
Check before you pay →How to Look Up a Cash App or Venmo Account by Phone or Name
Cash App: tap Pay, enter the full phone number with no dashes or brackets (or an email or $Cashtag), and Cash App shows the matching account if there is one. Stop there; you do not need to send anything. Without the app, open cash.app/$theirCashtag in a browser to see the display name and photo.
Venmo: use the search bar for a name, username, phone or email, or open venmo.com/u/username. A real personal account usually has a photo, some friends and a history; an account made last week with no friends is a warning sign.
Zelle: Zelle now lives inside banking apps. Start a payment to the phone number or email, and before you confirm, your bank shows the name the recipient enrolled with. That name comes from their bank account, so it is the most reliable free name check of the three. If it does not match the person you are dealing with, do not send.

Confirm the Person Behind the $Cashtag or Username
A display name proves nothing on its own; anyone can call themselves "Jessica Miller". The free way to test it is to see whether the handle leads to a real life. Most people reuse their $Cashtag or Venmo username on Instagram, TikTok, X or Snapchat. Enter it into Lullar, which checks the handle across 175+ sites at once, including Cash App and Venmo profile pages, free and without an account.
Look for an account that is a few years old, a photo that matches, and friends or posts that fit the story you were told. A $Cashtag that exists nowhere else, or that shows up only on brand-new accounts, deserves suspicion. The reverse username search guide explains how to read the results.
Check Who the Phone Number Belongs To
Cash App, Venmo and Zelle accounts all hang off a phone number, so the number is the strongest clue you have. Search it in quotes on Google, and save it as a contact to see whether WhatsApp or Telegram shows a name or photo.
For the owner's name, a reverse phone lookup is the step that ties the account to a person. Spokeo returns the name a number is registered to, the carrier and line type (a VoIP line is common for scammers), other numbers and emails, location history and linked social profiles where found. If the payment app says "Mike Torres" and the number comes back to someone else in another state, you have your answer. The free preview shows whether a record exists; the full report is paid (Spokeo listed $19.95 a month on 3 November 2026; check the price at checkout). Search the number or name on Spokeo. If the number turns out to be a TextNow or Google Voice line, read how to look up a TextNow or Google Voice number.

Common Situations and What to Do
- Paying a Marketplace seller or a landlord. Check that the Zelle name or Cash App name matches the person's other profiles and that the phone number comes back to them. Never send a deposit for something you have not seen. See how to verify an online seller and how to verify a landlord.
- A stranger sent you money "by mistake". Do not send it back yourself. This is a known scam: the money often came from a stolen card and gets pulled back later, leaving you out of pocket. Contact the app's support and let them reverse it.
- Someone asked you to pay a "fee" or "verification" amount. No real buyer, employer or prize needs that. Look the person up before you reply.
- You already paid and the person vanished. Report the payment in the app and to your bank right away, file at ReportFraud.ftc.gov, and keep the $Cashtag, username and number. Our guide on finding out who scammed you covers what to collect.
What These Lookups Can't Do
No app, support agent or website will hand you another user's bank details, transaction history or home address from a $Cashtag, and sites that claim a "Cash App owner finder" usually just run the same public checks shown above. Police and courts can get account records from the payment company with legal process; ordinary users cannot. Use these checks to protect yourself before paying, not to track down someone who does not want contact. Lullar and Spokeo are for personal use only, not for employment, tenant, credit or insurance decisions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you look up a Cash App account by phone number?
Yes. In Cash App, tap Pay and enter the full phone number without dashes or brackets. If the number is linked to an account and the owner's settings allow it, Cash App shows the display name and $Cashtag. You do not have to send money to see it.
How do I find out who owns a Cash App account?
Cash App only shows a display name the user chose, and support will not reveal account owners. To find the real person, search the $Cashtag as a username on Lullar to find their other profiles, and run the linked phone number through a reverse phone lookup such as Spokeo to see who it is registered to.
Does Zelle show the recipient's real name?
Before you confirm a payment, your banking app shows the name the recipient enrolled with at their own bank. It is usually their real name or business name, which makes it a useful free check. Do not send if the name does not match the person you are dealing with.
Can you search Venmo without an account?
Yes, if you know the username. Public Venmo profiles open in a browser at venmo.com/u/username and show the display name and photo. Searching by phone number or email needs the Venmo app.
Someone sent me money by mistake on Cash App. Should I send it back?
Do not send it back yourself. Accidental-payment scams use stolen cards, and the original payment can be reversed after you have sent your own money. Contact Cash App support and let them handle the reversal.
