Quick Answer: Can You Still Find Someone on Facebook by Email?

Not by typing the email into Facebook's search. Facebook disabled searching people by email address or phone number in April 2018, after scrapers abused it, and its help center now says searching someone's email will not show their profile unless the address happens to contain their full name. What still works is getting a name from the email and searching that with Facebook's filters.

Uploading contacts can also make Facebook suggest the profile, if the owner's lookup setting allows it. For the name, start with the address itself, Google and Lullar's free search, which checks the email's Gravatar and its handle across 175+ networks; a reverse email lookup such as Spokeo fills the gap when those fail. Use this for personal reasons, never for employment, tenant or credit decisions.

What Facebook's Email Setting Does Now

Facebook's privacy settings include a control for each email address and phone number on an account. It is now worded as Who can Facebook suggest your profile to based on your phone number or email address, under Settings & privacy > Settings > Audience and visibility > How people find and contact you.

OptionWhat it means for you as the searcher
Possible connections (default)Facebook may suggest the profile to people who have the email in their uploaded contacts
Friends of friendsOnly if you already share a friend
FriendsOnly if you are already friends
No oneThe email will never surface the profile

There is no "Everyone" option any more, so no setting lets a stranger look someone up by email.

Match the Email to a Name With Spokeo

Search an email address in 12+ billion US records to see the owner's name, location and the social profiles linked to them where found.

Step 1: Upload the Email as a Contact

Save the email in a contact card on your phone, then let the Facebook or Messenger app upload your contacts (look for Upload contacts or Find friends in the app's settings). If the owner's setting is Possible connections, the profile may appear in People You May Know. Results are indirect: suggestions mix contacts with mutual friends, schools and workplaces, so confirm the photo before you assume anything. Uploading also shares your whole address book with Meta; you can delete uploaded contacts from the same settings afterwards.

Step 2: Get a Name From the Email

  1. Read the address. jane.doe88@gmail.com already contains a name, and Facebook's help says an email that contains someone's full name can match it as text.
  2. Google it in quotes. Search "name@example.com"; club rosters, business pages and forum posts often attach a name.
  3. Search it on Lullar. Paste it into the search at the top of this page. A Gravatar hit belongs to that address and often shows a name and photo; handle matches on other networks may show a full name, but can belong to someone else.
  4. Use a reverse email lookup. Spokeo (founded 2006, Pasadena, California) searches more than 12 billion records by email, name, phone and address, and can return the owner's name, location and linked social profiles where found. Reviewers in September 2026 reported about $20–30 a month; confirm at checkout.

Step 3: Search the Name With Facebook's Filters

Type the name into Facebook's search, choose People, and narrow the list with the City, Education, Work and mutual-friend filters. A city from the reverse lookup or an employer from the email's domain usually cuts the list to a few profiles. Then match the profile photo, friends and places against what you know.

If the name is very common, our guides to finding someone on Facebook and finding someone by name and city have more filters to try.

Why Not Use Facebook's Account Recovery Page?

Facebook's Find your account page accepts an email or phone number, but it exists so owners can get back into their accounts, and Facebook checks the owner's lookup setting before confirming a profile there. Continuing the flow sends a code to the owner. It is not a people search, and using it on someone else's account is the kind of probing Facebook's 2018 change was meant to stop.

Which Method to Use When

Searches like these are for reconnecting and checking who you are talking to. Using them to harass or track someone can be a crime.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I search Facebook by email address?

No. Facebook disabled finding people by email or phone number in its search in April 2018. Its help center says an email search will not show someone's profile unless the email contains their full name.

Can someone find my Facebook profile with my email?

Only through suggestions, if they upload your email as a contact and your setting allows it. Set Who can Facebook suggest your profile to based on your email address to No one to stop that.

Does Lullar find Facebook profiles by email?

Lullar searches the email across 175+ networks for free: it checks the address's Gravatar and searches the part before the @ as a username. For Facebook, the most useful thing it gives you is a name to search with Facebook's filters.

Will the person know I looked up their email?

Google, Lullar and Spokeo searches do not notify them. Facebook's account-recovery flow can send them a code, which is one reason not to use it.

Is it legal to find a Facebook profile from an email?

Looking at public profiles for personal reasons is generally legal. Using what you find to harass someone is not, and people-search reports may not be used for employment, tenant, credit or insurance decisions under the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
